Instead, they are primarily designated for short- to medium-haul routes, connecting marshalling yards to end customers. Consequently, their operational focus will be on shorter mainline journeys, while intensive shunting duties will be managed by newly introduced VRS Modula and Toshiba HDB 800 locomotives. Am 15. März 2024 feierte DB Cargo offiziell die Übergabe und Genehmigung ihrer neuen Baureihe 249 Lokomotiven, auch bekannt als Vectron Dual Mode Light.

249 001, die erste Prototyp-Lokomotive, erhielt eine besondere Retro-Lackierung, um die älteren Baureihen zu würdigen, die sie ersetzen sollte.

249 001 wurde in den DB Cargo Werken in Halle (Saale) vorgestellt, unter dem Blick vieler Pressevertreter und der DB Cargo Direktorin Dr. Sigrid Nikutta. Während dieser Präsentation wurden die finalen Unterlagen für die Genehmigung dieser neuen Lokomotivklasse offiziell übergeben. Der kommerzielle Einsatz wird bald erwartet, beginnend mit den Operationen von DB’s Hub in Halle (Saale).

Das Design soll die klassischen Vorgänger des Vectron ehren: die V90 Rangierlok, die in Westdeutschland gebaut wurde, und die schwere sechsachsige Diesellok aus dem Osten, besser bekannt als die "Ludmilla". Von den verschiedenen Optionen wurde das Design gewählt, das typische Merkmale jeder klassischen Lokomotive darstellt, ohne die Form des neuen Vectron seltsam zu deformieren oder asymmetrisch zu gestalten:
die untere, elfenbeinfarbene Linie und die horizontalen Rillen sowie die rhombischen Lüftungsschlitze stammen von der Ludmilla;
die Taille und die Klappen stammen von der V90.
Die Idee, der Lokomotive zwei unterschiedliche Hälften zu geben, symbolisiert natürlich den Übergang von alt nach neu: alte ikonische Diesellokomotiven werden durch eine neue Lokomotive ersetzt, die Kraftstoff sparen kann, indem sie, wenn möglich, elektrisch fährt!

Nach der Zeremonie werden 6x Lokomotiven (249 001 - 006) an den Standorten Zwickau und Kreuztal getestet, um ihre Leistung unter realen Bedingungen vor der Serienauslieferung zu überprüfen. Sie werden bis Ende Juni auf Herz und Nieren geprüft. Sie müssen sich mit hohen Anhängelasten, steilen Steigungen und langen Strecken beweisen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf dem Wechsel zwischen elektrischen und dieselelektrischen Betrieb. Das DB Cargo Projektteam überwacht, dokumentiert und analysiert die Einsätze.

Nach zwei Monaten Testbetrieb hat das Team erste Schlussfolgerungen gezogen: Die Zweikraftlokomotiven können in den geplanten Schichten eingesetzt werden und funktionieren wie erwartet, selbst unter herausfordernden Wetterbedingungen. Besonders bemerkenswert sind die Zeitersparnisse auf Strecken, die zuvor mit Diesellokomotiven unter Oberleitungen betrieben wurden. Bereits während der Testfahrten wurden kleine Anpassungen identifiziert, und Siemens arbeitet an diesen letzten Feinabstimmungen.

Sobald die Tests abgeschlossen sind, wird die Serienauslieferung im Spätsommer 2024 beginnen. Bis Ende des Jahres sollen 30x Zweikraftlokomotiven im Einsatz sein, und alle 146x Maschinen sollen bis 2027 geliefert werden.

249 001, the first prototype locomotive, got a special retro livery to commemorate the older classes it was supposed to replace.

249 001 was presented in the DB Cargo works Halle (DE), under the eye of many press delegates and DB Cargo director Dr. Sigrid Nikutta. During this presentation, the final paperwork for the authorization of this new locomotive class was officially handed over. Commercial service is expected to commence soon, starting operations from DB’s hub in Halle (Saale).

The design should honor the Vectron's classic predecessors: the V90 shunter built in Western Germany and the heavy six-axle power-diesel from the east, better known as the "Ludmilla". From the different options, the design that depicts typical features of each classic locomotive was chosen without strangely deforming the shape of the new Vectron or making it asymmetric:
the lower ivory-coloured line and the horizontal ridges and rhombic air vents are from the Ludmilla;
the waistline and the hatches originate from the V90.
The idea to give the locomotive two different halves, of course, symbolizes the transition from old to new: old iconic diesel locomotives get replaced by a new type of locomotive that can save fuel by running electrically when possible!

Following the ceremony, 6x locomotives (249 001 - 006) are being tested at the Zwickau and Kreuztal sites to check their performance under real conditions before series delivery. They will be put through their paces until the end of June. They must prove themselves with high trailer loads, steep gradients, and long distances. A particular focus is on switching between electric and diesel operations. The DB Cargo project team supervises, documents, and analyses the operations.

After two months of trial operation, the team has drawn some initial conclusions: the dual-power locomotives can be used in the planned shifts and perform as expected, even in challenging weather conditions. Notably, the time savings on routes previously operated with diesel shunting locomotives under overhead lines are considerable. Small adjustments have already been identified during the test runs and Siemens is working on these final tweaks.

Once the trials are completed, series delivery will start in late summer 2024.
