Novelty 2026: Reliable in Modern Shunting Service – Class 296 The
Class 296 is an advanced diesel-hydraulic shunting and switching
locomotive, built on the foundation of the well-known V-90 family.
Originally designed as a radio-controlled variant of Class 295, the
integration of modern control and safety equipment resulted in a
powerful workhorse for the demands of wagonload traffic in the 21st
century. The conversion began in the late 1990s when the
then-freight division Railion significantly increased the need for
efficient, remotely controllable shunting locomotives. Today, the
locomotives feature the traffic red livery of freight operations
and are fully equipped for use with remote control. The strength of
the Class 296 is particularly evident in the daily operations at DB
Cargo: it hauls transfers, distributes wagons, and performs precise
shunting tasks in large marshalling yards. Thanks to its
reliability and flexibility, the 296 is an essential component for
smooth freight operations in Germany. Equipped with Voith fan wheel
