At the beginning of the 1980s, Renfe launched a tender to modernize
its fleet of shunting locomotives. This initiative led to the
creation of the Class 309, delivering 720 hp - twice the output of
the veteran Class 303. Its modern design offered improved comfort,
visibility, and ease of operation, quickly establishing it as an
essential locomotive for shunting duties across Spain. The
