In the late 1980s, RENFE decided to sell a significant portion of
the obsolete 5000 and 6000 series coaches. A contract was signed
with Cuba to refurbish these coaches, but the project was only
partially completed. This adaptation involved the refurbishment and
reconstruction of the interiors, which were of the compartment
type, and the modification of the coupling devices to the American
type, in addition to repainting the exterior. Coaches equipped with
both bellows and the original headstock configuration, with
gangways, were used. Several batches were sent and operated on the
island, but after several missed payments, the sale was halted.
RENFE was left with refurbished rolling stock with no planned use.
In 1992, due to the Seville Expo and the Barcelona Olympics, it was
decided to make use of the coaches from the failed Cuban order.
Model Electrotren has reproduced several examples of these vehicles
over the years, the most recent being the E5097. However, this time
we have reproduced for the first time the variant with the original
front end of these coaches, equipped with gangways, under the
reference HE4029, the B7r-6260.
