Novelty 2026: Power meets versatility – The M44 diesel locomotive.
The legendary M44 shunting diesel locomotives stand for robust
performance, high reliability, and versatile use in shunting and
light freight operations. Since the late 1950s, these diesel
locomotives have not only shaped operations in Hungary, but – in
exported variants – also found their way to the ?SD, Poland, and
the countries of the former Soviet Union. Equipped with the
powerful Ganz-Jendrassik XVI 170/240 V16 diesel engine and a top
speed of 80 km/h, the M44 combines economy, durability, and
flexibility. Its distinctive design, with the cab at the end of the
locomotive and practical gangways for shunting personnel, makes it
an unmistakable classic of European railway history. In addition to
the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) machines, numerous examples were
delivered to industrial and works railways, where the M44 quickly
became a familiar and valued workhorse thanks to its strong
tractive effort and robust construction. In international use, the
locomotives were flexibly employed for shunting-intensive tasks as
well as light transfer and branch line services whenever a durable,
straightforward vehicle was needed. The simple basic design
facilitated maintenance and repair for both state railways and
industrial operators, contributing significantly to the long
service life of the M44. Illuminated control panel | In digital
