For the transport of heavy bulk good containers, the freight wagon
lessor AAE, now belonging to VTG, required four-axle container flat
wagons with a load capacity of 70t. With the existing 60-foot units
of type Sgns 60, the middle compartment would have to remain
unoccupied when loaded with spoil troughs. For standard container
traffic, AAE had a sufficient number of flat wagons available,
which is why they decided to shorten older Sgns 60 and reintroduce
them as Sgmmns 173 with only 40 feet of usable length. AAE had more
than 100 wagons converted. The four-axle wagons can accommodate one
container with lengths of 40 and 30 feet, or two 20-foot
containers. The new wagons were initially used in construction
logistics around Stuttgart 21, as trains transported spoil among
other places to Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. Since several sets were
no longer needed in construction traffic, the short four-axle
wagons are now used in traffic with standard containers.
