The diesel locomotives of the type D753 originate from the reconstruction of several locomotives of the type T478.3 of the Czechoslovak Railways, which were built between the 1960s and 1970s and were nicknamed "Brejlovec" ("Glasses") due to the characteristic shape of the front windows of the cabs. Since 2001, about 40 machines of this type have arrived in Italy, purchased by various private railway companies, after being extensively modified by the company Leon D'Oro to modernize them and adapt them to the safety standards required for the Italian network. Some retained their original diesel engine, classified as D752, while most have received a new Caterpillar diesel engine and are classified as D753 or DE520 (for the vehicles registered by NordCargo). Due to their maximum speed of 100 km/h, they are mainly used for the transport of freight trains, both on electrified and non-electrified lines, and are now widely used on Italian tracks.
