1961

Between 1961 and 1964, 15x E40 units (including one E40.11 unit: E40 1166) are rented by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) to cope with the locomotive shortage.

The year 1964 in particular represented a challenge as Switzerland planned a national exhibition (Expo '64) in Lausanne. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) had to secure the transport of visitors from all over Switzerland to Lausanne (at the time not so many people owned a car and other modes of transport such as buses were not yet available to such an extent as it is the case today).

These units receive a scissor pantograph compatible with the Swiss national rail network from Brown, Boveri & Compagnie (BBC) while the second pantograph is locked. Initially the locomotives have 2 conductors on board until they are equipped with the Integra-Signum train protection system.
