1908

The 7x units from this series are ordered in 1908 by the Hungarian State Railways (MAV).

The locomotives are fitted with cog wheels as they are intended for the Subcetate - Boutari rack railway in Transylvania.

These units are initially registered as T IVc 4291 - 4297.

1911

These units are classified as Class 40, registration numbers 001 - 007.

1919

After the First World War, Transylvania becomes Romanian territory and the locomotives are taken over by the Romanian Railways (CFR).

The classification and registration remains the same but in order to avoid confusion with the Romanian Class 40 locomotives, in official documents these units are followed by the letter "D" (from the Romanian word "dintata" meaning "cogged").
