After the creation of the German Imperial Railways company (DRG) in 1921, former P 8 steam locomotives of the Prussian State Railway company are registered as Class 38.10 - 40.

1945

After the 2nd World War:
- around 1253x units are counted in Western Germany where they will be registered as Class 38 with the German Federal Railways (DB) after 1949;
- around 700x units remain in the Soviet-occupied zone.
