2016

The coaches from this series originated from FS UIC-Z1 2nd class compartment coaches built between the late 1980s and the 1990s and were extensively rebuilt by Alstom at the Savigliano Manufacturing Facility between 2017 and 2018 for Trenitalia’s InterCity services.

The donor vehicles underwent an extensive reconstruction which included the installation of a driving cab at one end, allowing the operation of reversible push-pull InterCity trains. The corresponding vestibule was relocated and the original compartment interior was replaced by a new open-plan 2nd class interior with 62 seats arranged in a 2+2 configuration. The electrical and onboard systems were also extensively modernised. Designated UIC-Z1A and classified npB, the rebuilt driving trailers were intended to operate with locomotives including the E.401, E.402B, E.403 and E.464 classes.

A total of 53 coaches were rebuilt and renumbered in the continuous 50 83 80-98 101 - 153 range. The first vehicles were completed in 2016 for testing, while the series entered regular passenger service from 2017, initially in XMPR and subsequently primarily in Trenitalia's InterCity livery.
