1984

In 1984, SJ ordered a new passenger car from Kalmar Verkstad. The B7 wagons had been running for a couple of years and their rear-seating interior had proved less suitable for families. The new carriage therefore received seating groups with seats opposite each other. In addition, a space was added for goods and cargo.

1985

35x units are delivered between 1985 and 1986.

The wagons were first given the letter B4, but this was later changed to the more correct BF4 where F stands for cargo space.

The carriages also had a service compartment for the train staff and next to this there was a small space with an information hatch. However, this was short-lived, after a couple of years the space was converted into a phone booth instead. During the 1980s, mobile phones developed rapidly and the carriages were equipped with a telephone that the passengers could use. Anyone who wanted to call had to buy a special phone card in the train's bistro. As personal mobile phones became more common, phone booths became redundant.

2010

Between 2010 and 2011, SJ upgraded its BF4 wagons and after renovation they received the letters BF7. SJ therefore no longer has any wagons with the letter BF4.
