The first modernized electric locomotive under the National
Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) has been completed and is now
awaiting testing and authorization for deployment later this year.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI), overseeing the
Sustainable Transport Component of the PNRR, announced that this
locomotive is part of a larger project funded by the European
Union, which includes the modernization of 55 electric
locomotives.
These modernized locomotives, which will be capable of speeds up to
160 km/h and pulling 16 carriages, will feature the European Train
Control System (ETCS) and cabin door control. Nineteen of these
locomotives will be adorned with the images of prominent historical
figures from Romania, featuring a unified design scheme that
extends across the entire fleet of 55 locomotives and 139
modernized passenger carriages.
The modernization project, with an allocated budget of €66 million
in EU grants, is part of a broader €555 million initiative under
PNRR, which aims to enhance the country’s railway infrastructure by
2026. This initiative also includes the purchase of new electric
locomotives, long-distance electric trains, hydrogen trains, and
the conversion of diesel shunting locomotives to electric.
