1999

24x Class 45 units are built at Electroputere Craiova in collaboration with Siemens starting in 1999 from Class 40 and Class 41 series.

Some of the changes are: electronic convertors for voltage and frequency for auxiliary equipments, the helicoidal compressor and improved driving cab dashboard. Right before the upgrade program started, CFR (Romanian railways) introduced the policy of one engineer only for passenger trains. So in order to present to the engineer all the functions and their indications, in the dashboard, an LCD display with real-time status of the locomotive was included. The classic "steering wheel" throttle specific to the 60's was replaced with a joy-stick type controller. The same happened for the brake valves for the train and locomotive being replaced with one joystick type pneumatic controller.

Also for the first time a new paint scheme was introduced: white ends and red body.
