The IR4 units, designed by ABB Scandia in Randers, consists of four-part electric multiple units for the Danske Statsbaner in Denmark. These units are a conceptual evolution of the IC3 diesel multiple units.

The construction of each unit includes one motor car designated ER (registration numbers 2001–2044), two intermediate cars designated FR (registration numbers 2201–2244 and 2301–2344), and another motor car designated ER (registration numbers 2101–2144). The trains operate on five bogies, including three Jacob's bogies. Each train is powered by four electric motors, each delivering 420 kW.

The IR4 series can be operated in multiple-unit control with the IC3 diesel multiple units. A notable feature of both series is a foldable driver's cab that can be converted into a passageway, allowing for the coupling of up to five units into a continuous train. Units connect through automatic Scharfenberg couplings, while the inter-car gangway is sealed against draughts by a rubber bellows. The trains are equipped with the ATC train control system tailored for Denmark.

Originally, the electric multiple units were developed for regional traffic on the electrified routes around Copenhagen and were therefore equipped more simply than the IC3 diesel multiple units, which were designed for long-distance travel. However, their operational area later expanded to include the electrified long-distance route from Copenhagen to Odense, Fredericia, and Sønderborg, resulting in an upgrade of their interior fittings to match those of the IC3 series.
