Alstom wins Fahrzeugmanagement Region Frankfurt RheinMain (Fahma)*'s tender for fuel cell trains. The French manufacturer will deliver 27x Coradia iLint trainsets.

The overall value of the contract is estimated at EUR 500 million. Starting from the timetable change in 2022, the hydrogen powered trainsets are expected to replace DMUs on four regional railway lines in the German Taunus region:
RB11: Frankfurt-Höchst - Bad Soden;
RB12: Frankfurt – Königstein;
RB15: Frankfurt – Bad Homburg – Brandoberndorf;
RB16: Friedrichsdorf – Friedberg.

In addition to the trains, the order also includes the supply of hydrogen, maintenance and the provision of reserve capacities for the next 25 years. The latter is offered in cooperation with Infraserv GmbH & Co. Höchst KG, with the filling station being located on the premises of the Höchst industrial park.

*Fahrzeugmanagement Region Frankfurt RheinMain (Fahma) is a subsidiary of the public transportation authority of the Rhein-Main area (Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund - RMV) responsible for the rolling stock.

The public transportation authority of the Rhein-Main area, Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), has awarded the twelve-year operational contract of a Taunus sub-network to a 100% Deutsche Bahn subsidiary: Regionalverkehre Start Deutschland GmbH (Start). Thus it will operate the 27x Alstom Coradia iLint hydrogen trains.

Regionalverkehre Start Deutschland GmbH (Start) take over operations on the Taunusbahn network in Hessen (DE). At this time, Alstom delivered only 8x units (with a mere 2x being ready for operation) and the entire fleet supposed to be delivered by April 2023.

Over two months of public transport chaos have followed, with transit agency RMV resorting to previous operator HLB and replacement bus services. The units that have made it into service have suffered under a permit from the Technical Inspection Association (TÜV) that requires Hydrogen tanks to be at least 1/3 full at all times, as well as various other malfunctions.

February

By the end of February 2023, only 14x units are delivered, with the remaining 13x units set to be delivered by early June.

Increase cancellations are signaled and one of the main reasons is the lack of functional vehicles due to significant technical deficiencies. Alstom promises to improve the situation by replacing problematic components and installing larger hydrogen tanks.

The problems continue, so much so that the Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV) has decided to take the Coradia iLint off the RB 15 line (Bad Homburg–Brandoberndorf) starting in January 2025. 16 diesel trains will gradually take over and remain in use during 2025 and Alstom will cover the costs.

The current situation:
RB 11 Bad Soden - Sulzbach - Frankfurt/Höchst (- Kelkheim): currently cancelled due to construction work;
RB 12 Königstein - Kelkheim - Frankfurt/Höchst - Frankfurt Hbf: the Coradia iLint remain;
RB 15 Brandoberndorf - Usingen (- Friedrichsdorf) - Frankfurt Hbf: diesel trains will arrive to replace Coradia iLint in 2025;
RB 16 Friedberg - Friedrichsdorf (- Bad Homburg): diesel trains have already taken over.

October

Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV) has informed the German news agency DPA that it expects the entire fleet of hydrogen trains to be deployed during the course of 2026.

Currently, some hydrogen trains are operational on the RB15 line, while others continue to run on the RB12 line.

Alstom has incurred expenses related to all repairs necessary for the fleet, in addition to the costs associated with running bus replacement services and diesel replacements. Furthermore, RMV has reduced payments to Alstom for maintenance of the fuel-cell trains. The specific financial impact of these costs on Alstom has not been disclosed.

Alstom confirms that the development of hydrogen-powered trains has been “temporarily paused” in France due to the withdrawal of French government funding for European hydrogen research projects. The company’s CEO, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, states that hydrogen technology is “not yet mature.” In an interview with French media outlet BFM Business, Alstom acknowledges an internal document indicating that certain hydrogen research and development programs have been suspended in France. An Alstom spokesperson informs IRJ that this suspension impacts locomotive and regional train hydrogen fuel cell research and development projects in the country.

However, the spokesperson emphasizes that the IPCEI projects in Italy and their associated funding remain fully intact. Alstom will continue to support these contracts as planned, including maintenance agreements for the Coradia iLint. In France, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Occitanie, Grand Est, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions have ordered 12 hydrogen-powered Régiolis trains, developed in cooperation with CAF. This deal, along with orders for the Coradia Stream H design from South East Railway and the North Milan Railway (FNM) in Italy, remains unaffected. FNM has awarded Alstom a framework contract to supply up to 14 hydrogen trains. Additionally, contracts for the supply and maintenance of Coradia iLint hydrogen trains for German regions continue to be unaffected.
