DB Cargo and Vossloh Locomotives establish an order for 50x hybrid locomotives, accompanied by a framework agreement that includes an option for an additional 200x locomotives. The delivery of these units, aimed at renewing the customer's fleet for domestic freight transport in Germany, is set to commence in 2024.

The DM 20 BDD drive variant is selected for this order and features two diesel generator sets along with a traction battery for energy storage. Each of the latest-generation diesel engines delivers an output exceeding 900 kW. The optimization of the second engine's control at its ideal operating point results in a significant reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The integrated battery has a capacity of over 120 kWh, utilizing lithium titanate cells known for their safety and durability. The energy storage system can be charged externally via plug-in methods or through regenerative braking while the locomotive is in operation.

The locomotives feature a fully redundant drive train, allowing for flexibility in converting the vehicles for future catenary operation with energy storage, potentially eliminating the reliance on diesel engines. Additionally, Vossloh Locomotives enables DB Cargo to retroactively incorporate future energy storage and generation technologies, further enhancing the operational capabilities of these locomotives.
