These four units, built alongside the Third Series ALe.601, were designed primarily for use on the “Super-Rapidi” Milan-Rome services.

The four units were similar to the Le.480 series, differing only in having fewer seats and a larger kitchen.

In 1979-80, the Le.420.002 and 004 trailers were converted into “electric motor cars” and reclassified as ALe.601.066-067, replacing the ALe.601.051 and 057 units that were involved in the tragic accident with the “Freccia della Laguna” on April 15, 1978, on the Bologna-Florence line.

The remaining two units, Le.420.001 and 003, were converted into Le.530.002 and Le.530.001 in 1985-87.
