1970

Unit ALn 668 11 is a prototype developed by Fiat Divisione Materiale Ferroviario towards the end of the 1960s (initially registered ALn.668.1999). Despite successful functional tests conducted from 1968 to 1969, the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) decided against further orders and transferred it to the Ferrovia Suzzara-Ferrara (FSF), which required rolling stock for the "Freccia Orobica" express service connecting Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Poggio Rusco, Ferrara, Rimini, and Pesaro.

Alongside the first unit, a twin unit is specially ordered by the FSF, completed at the Fiat factories in 1970, designated as ALn 668 12.
