Today, Danske Statsbaner (DSB) announces the acquisition of at least 100x Coradia Stream electric multiple units (EMUs) from French manufacturer Alstom. The new fleet is expected to form the backbone of passenger traffic and is scheduled to begin arriving in Denmark in 2024.

The acquisition of 100x new electric train sets represents the largest investment in DSB’s history, with a total investment exceeding EUR 2,7 billion, which includes maintenance. According to DSB, the tender, initiated in 2014, focused on an established and tested product platform. The first of the new electric train sets will be delivered in 2024, with the final units expected by 2029.

It is a historic day for DSB and for public transport in Denmark. With the order of new electric train sets, we can look forward to retiring the aging diesel-powered trains within a few years. In approximately 3.5 years, the first electric train sets will be delivered, and customers can anticipate a more efficient train operation with improved comfort and higher punctuality” states Peter Schütze, Chairman of the Board of DSB.

While a total of 100x trainsets has been ordered, DSB anticipates that as many as 150x will be acquired eventually.

The new electric trains are based on Alstom’s Coradia Stream platform, and the configuration for DSB is similar to the ICNG project in the Netherlands.

As part of the agreement, Alstom will be responsible for maintaining the electric train sets. To support the servicing and maintenance of the new trains, DSB is constructing two new workshops in Aarhus and Copenhagen. These workshops will be exclusively dedicated to the new train sets and will meet the highest possible environmental standards.

The fleet is set to become the backbone of intercity and regional traffic between Eastern and Western Denmark, replacing the aging IC3, IR4 and IC4 trains currently in service.

As reported by the Danish specialized magazine ING, the final name of DSB’s upcoming Coradia Stream fleet is 'IC5'1. This designation adheres to the established naming convention of the IC3 and IC4 DMUs currently in operation, both of which will eventually be replaced by these new EMUs. While IC5 will serve as the commercial name of the trains, their class designation according to the DSB Litra system will be 'ES'.

1This is not the first instance of DSB using the IC5 name. It was previously assigned to two prototype trains APO-Lyntoget developed by Scandia in the early 1980s.

May

DSB announces a delay in the manufacturing and delivery process of its upcoming Coradia Stream fleet. A combination of factors has necessitated a change in the delivery schedule for Denmark’s future trains. These factors include modifications to the train design related to the braking system and the number of doors. Additionally, the Danish state operator reports general uncertainty with worldwide supplies. Consequently, these issues have resulted in a six-month delay from the original schedule.

The new electric trainsets were initially expected to enter service in December 2024. The entry into service date has now been postponed to the middle of 2025.

DSB’s official statement regarding the delay reads:
“It’s not unusual for procurement projects of this magnitude to have their schedules adjusted. With the additional timeframe to take into account the challenges mentioned, there is the right time and breathing space for Alstom to deliver the trainsets as provided and DSB to receive and commission them in the best possible way” stated Jürgen Müller, Director of Strategy & Train Material at DSB.

DSB and Alstom are finalizing the design process for Denmark's future train, the IC5. The companies reached a significant milestone on May 11th, 2023, when they unveiled a 1:1 mockup of the new trains to the media. Previously, only computer-generated images provided insight into the appearance of the IC5 trains. A collaborative design development process involved teams from both DSB and Alstom. The unveiling marked the first physical representation of the train's design for the public.

DSB CEO Flemming Jensen states, “We have reached an important milestone with Alstom. The IC5 trains will become the backbone of climate-friendly, comfortable, and effective train traffic in Denmark in a few years. By finalizing the design of the trains, the actual production of the IC5 trains can begin.”

The industrial design process is still ongoing, with minor modifications expected. However, DSB indicates that finalization will occur soon, allowing production to commence.

About the Mockups

Three different mockup modules were unveiled at Copenhagen's central railway workshops:

A complete mockup of an end car, including both exterior and interior.
An interior mockup of the train's flex area.
An interior mockup of the catering and wheelchair-friendly areas.

These models validate the functionality of the train design for various passenger groups, including individuals with reduced mobility. They will also aid in personnel training and serve as a communication tool to demonstrate the expected passenger experience on the new trains.

Alstom has provided the mockups to DSB under an agreement, and they are expected to remain in Copenhagen until 2025.

End Car Exterior: Personalization

The train's exterior combines elements from the existing Coradia Stream design with DSB's preferences, which are influenced by its rebranding to solely red exteriors. DSB's trains feature a cab design distinct from other Coradia Stream variants, such as NS's ICNG and FS's Pop. A similar cab design will be introduced for the LNVG's Coradia Stream HC and DB Regio's Coradia Stream HC, while Baden-Württemberg's Coradia Stream HC will have a different cab design. A fourth variant has been seen in preliminary renders of the Renfe's Coradia Stream and FGC's Coradia Stream for Spain.

The DSB IC5 livery is characterized by a red bodyshell with black masks on the sides and cab ends, integrating the windows in a minimalist yet elegant manner. Train doors are designed to stand out in compliance with TSI regulations, featuring a light grey exterior and a red interior.

Passenger (Seating) Area

The end car mockup includes a general seating area for the IC5. Most seats are arranged in a conventional layout, with a few in a vis-à-vis configuration with a table. Each seat includes armrests, a reclining table, coat hooks, and individual power outlets. Brightly illuminated luggage racks above the seats enhance the sense of spaciousness within the train.

Driver’s Cab

The driver’s cab features a centralized layout with the driver's seat positioned in the middle. The train controls desk has a darker color scheme compared to the rest of the cab. Access to the cab is available from the passenger area corridor and through side doors for individual access by train drivers.

Flex Area

The trains include flex areas designed to accommodate bulky luggage, prams, and bicycles. These spaces are equipped with folding seats to enhance flexibility.

Catering Zone, Wheelchair-Friendly Zone, and Toilet

The third mockup showcases the centrally located catering area accessible to all passengers. It includes vending machines offering snacks and drinks, along with a bar table and power socket.

Adjacent to the catering area is a zone designated for wheelchair users, which accommodates two wheelchairs while integrating seamlessly with standard seating. The mockup also features a spacious, wheelchair-accessible toilet located next to the entry doors, arranged in the following sequence: entry doors, PRM toilet, catering area, and wheelchair zone.

A Design Style Rooted in Danish Traditions

To ensure passenger comfort and the ability to relax or work during the train journey, the design teams have adopted a simple and functional approach in the industrial design of the trains. DSB emphasizes the use of durable, high-quality materials that reflect Danish design traditions. For instance, the seat upholstery incorporates a significant proportion of wool. The selected colors are neutral, creating a calm and timeless ambiance.

2023

November 30

DSB announces a delay in the production of its future IC5 fleet. With the revised plan, the IC5 trainsets will now begin operations in the 2027 timetable, resulting in a delay of 1,5 years. Alstom requires more time than expected to finalize the IC5 design and ensure that the trainsets meet the high standards for quality, comfort, and reliability set by DSB. Two other significant factors contributing to the delay are uncertain global supply chains and the need to adjust capacity and production plans.

It is unfortunate, but not unusual, that schedules are adjusted for large train purchases. There are no off-the-shelf products, and even when buying as standard as possible, it is a big and complex task to get all the details right so that the final design of the trainsets fulfills all the specific conditions in each country” says Jürgen Müller, Director of Strategy & Rolling Stock at DSB.

The first trainsets are expected to be ready for testing and authorization in 2025. DSB states it can "look at and learn from the Dutch experience" with the launch of ICNG trainsets.
