1980s

The DSB IC5 series, known in Denmark as the APO-Lyntoget or "prototype train," consists of two five-car trainsets developed by the Danske Statsbaner (DSB) in the late 1970s. These trains were powered by locomotives and entered service in the early 1980s, with the aim of introducing a new type of train for national transport.

The trains had a short operational period with the DSB. The operational experiences gained from the IC5 series informed the subsequent development of the IC3 trains.

Trains enter service

The trains were put into service between Copenhagen and Aarhus sometime in March 1982. It soon, however, became clear that the trains were plagued by issues with electrical systems, doors on the Great Belt Ferry and climate control units.

Trains are sold to Iran

In 1992, the sets were pulled from service in Denmark and sat in Rødby Færge untill 1994 where the Iranian state showed interest in the 2 sets along with around 150 other passenger wagons. They decided to purchase the 2 sets along with the other coaches, and in 1995 they were refurbished in Aarhus, painted in the Iranian railways grey livery and shipped off from Esbjerg Dock. The last known photographs of the trains were taken in 2005, meaning that the current fate is unknown.
