Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, signs a contract to supply 130x Coradia Stream High Capacity (HC) electric double-deck trains to Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW) for the Baden-Württemberg network in Germany. In addition to delivering the trains, Alstom provides full-service maintenance for 30 years to ensure seamless availability. The contract includes an option to order up to 100x additional trains, with a total contract value of nearly €2.5 billion for the initial 130 trains and their maintenance.

The four-car trains consist of two double-deck control cars and two single-deck middle cars, providing a total of 380 seats. Each train measures 106 metres in length and can operate with multiple traction. The trains are built according to SFBW requirements and enhance modern transport in the region. Air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, numerous charging options for mobile devices, and reading lamps contribute to a pleasant travel experience. Additionally, lounge areas, conference compartments, and family compartments offer high levels of comfort, while multi-purpose compartments accommodate large luggage, prams, and bicycles. Wide single-leaf doors and optimized opening and closing times facilitate quick entry and exit. Passengers with reduced mobility will experience the same comfort as other passengers, with doorsills allowing step-free access from standard platforms at 760 mm above the top of the rails, supplemented by special lifts for wheelchair users at stations with varying platform heights.

The trains integrate modern signalling and automation technology as part of the "Digital Node Stuttgart" (DKS) project, Germany’s first digitized railway node. They are set to commence operations in 2025 alongside the first two segments of the DKS. The subsequent upgrade of the vehicles to TSI CCS 2022, the future evolution of European standards for cross-border traffic in the European Economic Area, will be completed by mid-2027, enabling usage of all three DKS sections.

The new Coradia Stream High Capacity trains will also feature the European Train Control System (ETCS) levels 2 and 3, along with vehicle devices for Automatic Train Operation (ATO) at Grade of Automation (GoA) 2. This will mark the first instance in Germany where newly built vehicles include a Train Integrity Monitoring System (TIMS) and ETCS Level 3, along with partial implementation of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). This technology supports tighter, denser, and more energy-efficient operations through enhanced signalling and driving commands, improving the efficiency and reliability of regional transport, especially on busy lines. Passengers can expect more frequent and safer connections, as Alstom merges sustainability, capacity, and comfort with the Coradia Stream High Capacity, contributing to greener, smarter, and more comfortable regional transport in the long term.

Alstom announces initial delays: only 14x trains instead of the anticipated 80x are expected to be ready by the end of December 2025, coinciding with the partial commissioning of the Stuttgart new railway station.

The manufacturer attributes the delay to issues in the tender procedure (a competitor filed an appeal), the war in Ukraine and general supply chain bottlenecks.
