PESA signed in January 2024 three contracts with the Romanian
Railway Reform Agency (ARF) for the supply of 62 vehicles for
regional rail services (RE-R) across three regions: Bucharest, Cluj
and Suceava.
The regional EMUs are designed for 160 km/h operation. The trains
are 77·2 m long, and have capacity for 465 passengers, 238 of which
can be seated, including 14 folding seats.
During the railway conference in Oradea organized by Club Feroviar,
PESA presents the first electric multiple unit manufactured for
Romanian Railways. Following the presentation, the Pesa 655-5
series vehicle will commence its initial homologation tests on the
experimental track in Făurei.
Mihai Barbu, President of the Romanian Railway Development Agency
(ARF), expresses satisfaction that the first of the 62 vehicles has
already arrived, emphasizing the significant improvements in travel
quality, comfort, and safety. He believes this marks the beginning
of a long-term collaboration with PESA, signaling a positive
development for Polish-Romanian cooperation within the European
context. Maciej Maciejewski, Vice President of PESA for Sales,
mentions the challenges posed by the tight contract realization
timeline and expresses satisfaction that the first vehicle has
arrived in Romania as planned, with homologation tests set to begin
immediately after the presentation.
Mariana Ioniță, State Secretary in the Romanian Ministry of
Transport, acknowledges the efforts made by PESA in delivering the
first vehicle ahead of schedule, highlighting the company's
commitment to meeting client expectations. The Pesa 655-5 is a
three-car electric multiple unit designed for regional passenger
transport, capable of carrying 238 seated passengers and reaching
speeds of up to 160 km/h. It features a modern, lightweight shell
construction that ensures passenger safety and durability. Each of
the three units is supported on separate bogies, a design approach
that has been successfully implemented in vehicles delivered to the
private operator Regio Jet in the Czech Republic. PESA employs
advanced technology, with vehicle frames and bogies being
laser-welded at robotic stations, resulting in high-quality,
precision-engineered components.
The 655-5 series vehicles are designed for operation on 25 kV AC
power supply, utilizing IGBT semiconductor technology to ensure low
energy consumption. The combination of energy efficiency and the
use of recyclable materials makes this vehicle environmentally
friendly, as noted by Grzegorz Chojnacki, Director of the Romanian
Contract at PESA. The commitment to quality design and execution
guarantees optimal operational costs throughout the vehicles'
lifespan, while modern interior fittings and monitoring systems
enhance comfort for both passengers and operators.
According to the contract, PESA will be responsible for maintaining
all vehicles supplied to Romanian Railways for a minimum of 15
years, which has led to the establishment of a local office in
Bucharest to manage the contract and service centers.
