On 7 August 2025, Alstom publicly reveals the design of the Traxx Universal electric locomotive intended for the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) at Bucharest Nord railway station.

The first locomotive has arrived in Romania and is currently undergoing a comprehensive dynamic testing program at the Faurei Testing Centre in August. Following this, a testing program will take place in Germany on TSI-certified lines.

The locomotive is temporarily covered in a blue livery, which is applied to protect its surface during testing; a final dark red coating will be implemented once the testing program is completed.

Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova, expresses pride in seeing the first Traxx Universal locomotive for ARF entering testing on schedule, highlighting the significance of this achievement as a step forward in delivering high-performance, sustainable mobility solutions for Romania.

The new locomotives are anticipated to significantly enhance the country's sustainable rail transport capabilities in terms of speed and reliability. These four-axle electric locomotives will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h and will be capable of towing up to 16 passenger cars. They will be outfitted with Alstom’s advanced onboard ERTMS system to ensure optimal efficiency, high safety and security levels, and full interoperability.

Deliveries of the locomotives are expected to begin in the first half of 2026.
