The AB3 features a mix of compartments and salons, with the first-class section including two compartments and a small salon equipped with two initially movable, but now fixed, armchairs in the center. The second-class section comprises a two-part salon.

2004

Starting in 2004, SJ began the systematic scrapping of their 1960s cars, culminating in the retirement of the last of these coaches in January 2006.

While most AB3 coaches were scrapped, a few found new owners. In the early 2000s, two AB3 coaches, numbered 4870 and 4872, were taken over by the Authority Statens Järnvägar and leased to Connex. In 2007, these coaches were purchased by NetRail, a company specializing in the rental and sale of railway vehicles, which subsequently sold them to Veolia Transport (now known as Snälltåget) in the autumn of 2009. These coaches have been upgraded with power outlets, Wi-Fi, and new upholstery. Additionally, two other coaches, 4874 and 4885, are owned by Tågåkeriet i Bergslagen AB (Tågab) and are utilized in the company's passenger services on the Gothenburg-Karlstad-Falun/Mora and Karlstad-Stockholm routes. Previously, Tågab also owned coach 4878, but it was scrapped following a fire in 2016. That same year, Tågab acquired AB3 coach 4875 from the museum association Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap. These coaches are equipped with power outlets and Wi-Fi as well.
