1932

Following a series of particularly impressive trials carried out in 1932 and 1933 with locomotive 231 PO 3715, the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord placed an order in 1933 with the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans for a batch of 20 rebuilt Pacific locomotives of "Chapelon first-type".

The transformations were carried out in 1934 at the Paris–Orléans workshops in Tours, which were responsible for rebuilding the locomotives. The new series was numbered 3.1171 - 3.1190.

A second batch of “Chapelon second-type” locomotives was ordered in 1936 and were registered 231 Nord 3.1111 - 3.1130 & 3.1191 - 3.1198.
