The BB 25100 is a class of French electric locomotives built for the SNCF in the mid-1960s to operate on both 1 500 V DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC electrified lines. As part of the wider BB Jacquemin family, these dual-voltage machines combined flexibility with dependable performance for mixed passenger duties across France.

Constructed by Matériel de Traction Électrique (MTE) between 1964 and 1965, a total of 25 BB 25100 locomotives, registered BB-25101 - BB-25125, were delivered to the SNCF. Designed by André Jacquemin, this class was intended to handle routes where the electrical system changed between DC and AC, enabling seamless operation without locomotive exchanges.

Design & technical features:
• Dual-voltage power: Compatible with both 1500 V DC and 25 kV AC catenary systems, giving them versatile service capability.
• Bo’Bo’ wheel arrangement: Four axles in two bogies provided standard traction characteristics for mainline service.
• Traction motors: Four TO 136-8 motors with forced ventilation supplied the locomotive’s electrical drive.
• Performance: Maximum speed was about 130 km/h, suitable for express passenger and light freight trains.

BB 25100 locomotives were assigned mainly to services in eastern and central France, including routes such as Épinal - Chalindrey - Dijon - Avignon, Metz - Toul - Dijon and Bellegarde - Annemasse - Évian. The dual-voltage capability made them especially useful on lines where electrical systems transitioned.

After decades of service, the class was gradually withdrawn, with the last units retired around 2007. Two of the final locomotives (BB 25109 and BB 25124) were sold to Grup Feroviar Român (GFR) in Romania for further use or spares.
