The BB 25200 is a class of French dual-voltage electric locomotives built for the SNCF to operate seamlessly under both 1'500 V DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead power systems. These versatile locomotives were key performers on mainline passenger services from the mid-1960s until their retirement in 2012.

Designed by engineer André Jacquemin and constructed by Matériel de Traction Électrique (MTE), the BB 25200 class was introduced to fill the role of a high-speed dual-voltage locomotive, combining the best features of the earlier BB 9200 and BB 16000 classes. It represented a further step in the SNCF’s strategy to unify traction capabilities across different electrification systems.

A total of 51 locomotives were built between 1965 and 1975, with additional units converted later from the BB 25150 series to expand the class.

Design & technical features:
• Dual-voltage operation: Designed to draw power from both 1 500 V DC and 25 kV AC catenaries for flexible operation across the French electrified network.
• Wheel arrangement: Bo’Bo’ configuration for stable high-speed running.
• Power & performance: Rated at approximately 3 400 kW under DC and 4 130 kW under AC, with a top speed of 160 km/h.
• Operational flexibility: Many units were later equipped with push-pull (reversible) controls to handle commuter and regional trainsets, especially in the Rhône-Alpes region.

BB 25200 locomotives were initially deployed on long-distance express services, including routes where electrification changed between DC and AC, such as Paris - Le Mans - Rennes. They later appeared on a wide variety of passenger runs across France, from Paris connections to regional services and Paris - Lyon / Aix-les-Bains traffic.

During the 1980s, selected units were modified to Class BB 25200R with push-pull gear for efficient commuter service. These modernized locomotives served into the 2000s until the class was fully retired from regular revenue service by 2012.
