1972

The S 458.0 was developed by Škoda in Plzeň alongside the DC version (E 458.0) to standardize shunting operations across both power systems. While it shares the same iconic "Flatiron" (Czech: Žehlička) look, it was designed specifically for the 25 kV, 50 Hz AC electrified network prevalent in the southern and western regions of the former Czechoslovakia.

The prototype (S 458.0001) was completed in 1972 and followed immediately by a first series of 30 locomotives by the end of 1973. Due to its success, two more production series followed in 1979 and 1983, bringing the total number of units to 74. These locomotives were stationed in AC-electrified hubs such as Plzeň, Cheb, and České Budějovice (Czech side) and Bratislava, Zvolen, and Leopoldov (Slovak side).

Although the mechanical structure and "center-cab" body are identical to the E 458.0, the internal technology is quite different:
Transformer control: Because it operates on AC, the locomotive uses a main transformer. This allowed for a more energy-efficient, low-loss control system compared to the resistor-based DC version.
Precision at low speeds: Unlike the DC version, the S 458.0 did not require special auxiliary pantographs for hump yard work. Its electrical design naturally allowed for very precise, low-speed operation (down to 5 km/h).
Passenger service: It features a specialized heating transformer capable of providing 1.5 kV or 3 kV for train heating, making it suitable for local passenger trains as well as shunting.

The units from this series are reclassified as Class 210.

1993

Following the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the fleet was divided between the Czech Railways (ČD) and the Slovakian Railways (ŽSR / ZSSK).
