1967

The first variant of the Rc series locomotives was delivered to the Swedish State Railways (SJ) in 1967, incorporating design lessons learned from the experimental Rb locomotives. These locomotives utilized direct current motors, with thyristors managing the current instead of traditional relays. This innovation significantly reduced the risk of slipping, enabling consistent speed maintenance, while also lowering maintenance costs due to the cheaper upkeep of thyristors compared to relays.

Initially, a total of twenty locomotives were built, and they were originally designated simply as Rc. The designation changed to Rc1 only after the order for the Rc2 was placed.

In 2001, the locomotives were transferred to Green Cargo following the separation of SJ's cargo division.
