The second variant of Rc locomotives is constructed based on the insights gained from the Rc1 series. Deliveries of the Rc2 began in 1969 and were completed by 1975, resulting in a total production of 100 units. Notably, the number of thyristors was nearly halved compared to the earlier Rc1 model.

Initially, the Rc2 locomotives operated the same services as their Rc1 predecessors before being assigned to Green Cargo following the 2001 company split.
