CFR Marfa ordered the modernization of Class 81 diesel
hydraulic locomotives at Remarul in Cluj-Napoca. From 2005, the
locomotives will be modernized. A new Caterpillar engine replaces
Sulzer's license building. The superstructures are completely new.
Remarul now refers to the locomotives as Carpathia 1300. During the
conversion, the locomotives are now designated as 84-1001 to
84-1026. The first six locomotives have the original cab with a
round roof and much more square stems.
