2005

The coaches from this series originated from different batches of FS Gran Confort coaches built between 1970 and 1988 and were extensively rebuilt from the mid-2000s as part of Trenitalia's Progetto IC 901 programme.

The donor vehicles included both open-saloon and compartment coaches from different construction batches, externally identifiable by their smooth or ribbed roofs. During the rebuilding, they received a new open-plan 1st class interior with 52 seats arranged in a 2+1 configuration, together with upgraded electrical and air-conditioning systems, power sockets and electronic destination displays. The rebuilt coaches were authorised for speeds of up to 200 km/h and renumbered in the 61 83 19-90 series.

The 61 83 19-90 200 - 379 range theoretically covers 180 numbers, which corresponds to the 180 1st class coaches originally planned under Progetto IC 901; however, the available documentation does not allow us to confirm that every number in this range was actually assigned or that all 180 planned coaches were ultimately rebuilt. The series should therefore be considered potentially incomplete.
