The programme was launched as a continuation of the earlier Progetto IC 901 modernisation programmes and involved 270 passenger coaches intended primarily for conventional InterCity services. The Gran Confort coaches received completely renewed open-plan interiors together with upgraded electrical and air-conditioning systems, while retaining their characteristic original bodies. They were authorised for speeds of up to 200 km/h and renumbered in the 61 83 19-90 500 - 567 range.
This range theoretically covers 68 numbers; however, the available documentation does not currently allow us to confirm that every number between 500 and 567 was actually assigned, and the actual number of coaches may therefore have been lower.
