2014

The coaches from this series originated from different batches of FS Gran Confort and Self-Service coaches built between the 1970s and the 1990s and were extensively rebuilt from the mid-2010s as part of Trenitalia’s InterCity Progetto IC 901 modernisation program.

During the rebuilding, they were converted into BHR special coaches combining 2nd class seating, facilities for passengers with reduced mobility and a refreshment area. The vehicles also received upgraded electrical and air-conditioning systems and electronic destination displays. Despite their common function and numbering, significant external differences remained as a result of the different types of donor vehicles. The rebuilt coaches were authorised for speeds of up to 200 km/h and renumbered in the 61 83 85-90 series.

The 61 83 85-90 200 - 229 range theoretically covers 30 numbers; however, the numbering was not continuous and numerous numbers within the range were apparently not assigned.
