New Swiss postal wagons unveiled

SWISS PostMail unveiled its newly-commissioned fleet of Habbiillnss sliding wall bogie freight wagons at its Härkingen sorting centre in central Switzerland this week.

The Swiss postal service has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its logistics network with the introduction of a new fleet of freight wagons. Developed by the Swiss rolling stock leasing company Wascosa, these wagons bear the distinctive yellow livery of the Swiss postal service and are designed to enhance the efficiency and capacity of postal transportation across Switzerland.

Each wagon in this new fleet is designed with a spacious loading area of 62.4m², capable of accommodating up to 63 Europallets. What sets these wagons apart is their innovative design, featuring two or more movable dividing walls, allowing for versatile and efficient use of space. These high-capacity wagons are built to handle substantial payloads, capable of carrying up to 63.5 tonnes at a speed of 100km/h, and 53.5 tonnes at 120km/h.

This fleet upgrade is a strategic move by PostMail, as these wagons will be primarily used on the three main rail routes that connect major sorting centres in Switzerland. The focus is on ensuring next-day delivery, a critical aspect of postal service efficiency. The Härkingen sorting centre, playing a pivotal role in this network, is strategically located between Bern and Zürich. It is a bustling hub, processing over 1 million items of post per day, and is well-equipped with its own rail facility, handling nine arrivals and eleven departures daily.

In a significant shift in its operational model, PostMail has opted to lease these 55 sliding wall wagons from Wascosa. This decision comes as the postal service moves away from owning its vehicles, favoring the flexibility and reduced responsibilities that come with leasing. This move signifies a new era for PostMail, as it embraces modern logistics solutions to meet the evolving demands of postal services in Switzerland.
