1932

The railcar 872 is delivered by the Wismar Wagon factory on July 28th, 1932. The procurement costs amounted to 185,000 Reichsmarks. The railcars 873 and 874 followed soon after.

These are the first railcars to have a diesel-electric drive: in one bogie lay the diesel engine, in the other bogie two electric motors. They were the heaviest railcars of the German Railways at the time. They marked the end of powered rail cars derived from heavy, riveted passenger cars, but the application of the 410 horsepower Maybach motor for the first time was in turn the beginning of diesel-powered rail cars in main line use. This motor in an improved form was subsequently one of the mostly widely used on the DRG in express as well as regional powered rail cars.

These units are mainly used for shuttle services between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

1949

Unit VT 872 is converted to VT 92 502 by Augsburg-Nuremberg Machine factory between 1949 and 1951.

The initial plan also included the transformation of unit VT 874 in VT 92 502 but finally it didn't take place.
