In July 2010, SBB Cargo ordered 30 BUTLER Eem 923 dual-power locomotives from Stadler for traction requirements for shunt- ing and light cargo duties. The dual-power vehicle is a compact locomotive which can be operated at 15 kV/16.7 Hz or 25 kV/50 Hz when connected to the overhead contact line. It can also be operated independent of the overhead contact line for the «last mile» without any loss in train performance. With an output of 1500 kW, a maximum speed of 120 km/h and the option of multiple unit train control for up to four locomotives, the Eem 923 is suitable both for line service and shunting. It is primarily operated with an overhead contact line. This makes it very economical in terms of consumption. In addition, the Eem 923 requires little maintenance and promises high levels of availability and longevity.

Technical features - Technology:
– High electrical output and tractive effort;
– Economical in consumption, long maintenance intervals and thus high availability;
– Non-wearing electrical brake with feedback of electrical energy into the overhead contact line network (recuperation) or via brake resistors in diesel mode;
– Pneumatic brake: indirect brake for train and direct brake for locomotive;
– High-performance screw compressor with output of 2'400 L/min;
– Three-phase current AC motor with IGBT power converter for operation independent of the overhead contact line.

Technical features - Personnel:
– Air-conditioned driver’s cab;
– Optimum visibility for shunting;
– With a maximum speed of 120 km/h and an option for multiple unit train control, it can be used for shunting and line services;
– Multiple unit train control for up to four vehicles;
– Remote control (optional also for multiple unit train control);

Technical features - Reliability / Availability / Maintainability / Safety:
– Integra and ZUB 262ct automatic train control with Eurobalise Optional: ETCS Level 2, Indusi
– Vehicle control system with train bus, vehicle bus and diagnostics computer
