The Phoenix locomotive marks a significant milestone in Romanian engineering, being the first electric locomotive designed with low voltage adjustment and choppers specifically for continuous current engines. Its name reflects a powerful symbolism, embodying the concept of rebirth and innovation, reminiscent of the mythological bird rising from its ashes. A total of six Phoenix locomotives have been constructed, with 3x acquired by
DB Cargo (
Class 47.1 and
Class 47.8), 2x by
CFR Călători (
Class 47.3), and 1x by
MMV Hungary (
Class 602).
With a robust design featuring a Co-Co axle formula and a nominal power output of 5,100 kW, which can peak at 6,600 kW, emphasises the locomotive's potential for high performance and efficiency on the tracks.
These locomotives are the basis for the
Transmontana series of electric locomotives.
