The CFR Class 47 represent locomotives from the Class 40 or Class 41 modernised by Softronic from 2007. Starting with the mid 1990s, it was decided to rebuild a number of locomotives, a number of them being modernised between 1998 and 2002 by Siemens-Secheron, resulting in CFR Class 45. The project however was stopped and it wasn't until 2006 when PROMAT and Softronic decided to rebuild a number of locomotives for freight use. Starting in 2007, the passenger locomotive modernisations began as well, but only by Softronic.

2007

The passenger locomotives that belong to CFR Călători (Romanian State Railways for Passenger Transport) were modernised using the IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) technology for traction motors control. The locomotive performance was improved (increasing the power from 5100 kW / 6800 HP to 7000 kW / 9400 HP) and cruise control and a better anti-slip mechanism were introduced.

Following the modernisation, energy consumption was reduced as well as maintenance time and costs.

These locomotives are also equipped with the safety and signalling system for the Hungarian railways network to be able to run in this country. The board computer software is also translated in Hungarian.

The IGBT technology equipped locomotives were registered as Class 47.6 for locomotives with a maximum speed of 120 km/h (former 060-EA / Class 40) and as Class 47.7 for locomotives with a maximum speed of 160 km/h (former 060-EA1 / Class 41).
