The first 2 prototypes (E 11 001 and 002) are delivered.
1962
First batch of 40 units is delivered.
Compared with the prototypes, the fan grills on the side are arranged vertically and have rounded angles.

The locomotives receive new registration: Class 211.

1976
The second batch of 54 units is delivered.
While the first batch had 4x double grills per side, the second batch has 6x single grills per side.

1985
Between 1985 and 1991, 22 units are reconfigured with different gear ratios so their performance parameters (top speed and tractive effort) were the same as Class 242.
But they were not quite identical (they still had different controls), so the reconfigured Class 211 units were registered as Class 242.3.

1992

1998
The last 4 remaining units from Class 109 are taken out of service by the German Railway Corporation (DB).
Some units continue to be used by private companies.
