Between 1985 and 1991, 22x Class 211 units are reconfigured with different gear ratios so their performance parameters (top speed and tractive effort) were the same as Class 242.

But they were not quite identical (they still had different controls), so the reconfigured Class 211 units were registered as Class 242.3.
