1959

As mail transport increased more and more in the 1950s, the Belgian postal service decided to start discussions with the NMBS officials to find appropriate solutions for this purpose. The conclusion was reached to renovate old AM35 train sets as AM APT35 units: it was decided to keep only the motor vehicles and to use the intermediate cars as service cars (the motor cars would be coupled to serve as new dual mail train sets).

1962

Even if the plans regarding the conversion to postal trains were ready in 1962 and a first test drive even took place on October 3rd, 1962, on the Brussels-Charleroi line, the first converted unit for mail transport (unit 221.801) was delivered on December 1st, 1967 (the equipment was in a much worse condition than expected and the engines were also replaced with the same traction engines as those used for the types 50 and 53).

The postal services had an option on all twelve old AM35 sets but eventually only eight were converted, registered 221.801 to 221.808.
