A train that could collect your post without stopping?
For decades, Britain’s Travelling Post Offices were a vital part of
the railway network, allowing mail to be sorted while trains were
on the move. Some TPOs could even collect and deposit mailbags
using specialised lineside apparatus.
Now Hornby brings this unusual piece of railway history to OO Gauge
with the RailRoad Royal Mail TPO Coach 80331.
In this video, we take a closer look at the Hornby R40568, explore
the history behind the Travelling Post Office and put its working
mailbag transfer mechanism through its paces.
The real TPO era eventually came to an end, with the final UK
carriage-based operation running on the night of 9 January
2004.
