Hold on tight, it’s going to be powerful! With the 2-8-4 Berkshire,
we present a true masterpiece of American steam locomotive history.
During the Roaring Twenties, a new generation of freight
locomotives emerged in the United States: bigger, stronger,
faster.
Based on the proven Mikado design, LIMA developed a so-called Super
Power locomotive in 1925, featuring significantly increased boiler
output and a revolutionary chassis.
The result was a machine that set new standards — immensely
powerful in appearance, impressive in engineering, and to this day
a symbol of the golden age of American railroading.

The Special One
Berkshire 2-8-4 Steam Locomotive
The locomotive takes its name from the Berkshire Mountains on the
East Coast of the United States, where the prototype was
extensively tested in 1925 on the line of the Boston & Albany
Railroad. The convincing test results led to rapid series
production. More than 600 units were built by 1949.
Ten of the distinctive Coffin Berkshires were later sold to the
Southern Pacific Railroad, where they received a silver-painted
smokebox — a striking detail from this short but impressive chapter
in their history.
Although most of these machines have long since been scrapped,
several Berkshires still survive today, two of them even
operational under steam. They stand as representatives of one of
the most significant chapters in American railroad history.
