For over 160 years, Britain's mail wasn't just carried by train —
it was sorted on it. The Traveling Post Office (TPO) turned railway
carriages into moving sorting rooms, complete with a system for
snatching and dropping mailbags at full speed without the train
ever stopping.
In this video, we trace the TPO from its 1838 origins on the Grand
Junction Railway, through its Victorian expansion with lineside
mailbag apparatus, its peak in the mid-20th century with 49 mail
trains a night, right up to the final service in January 2004.
