November 8th, 1967: The famous E 444.001 "Tartaruga" locomotive
made its inaugural journey from Rome Termini to Naples Mergellina
in just 88 minutes.
During the ceremony, the highest officials of the Italian State and
the FS presented to the public one of the most famous and beloved
locomotives in the history of the Italian State Railways,
characterized by power and speed. In the splendid images of this
newsreel, we retrace together the stages of an unforgettable day,
which indelibly marked the memories of so many Italians.
Today, this same locomotive, completely restored, is housed in one
of the pavilions of the National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa.
