Scheldeland in Steam is Belgium’s premier historical transport
festival, taking visitors on an authentic journey back to the
industrial age. Organized by the vzw Stoomtrein Dendermonde-Puurs
in collaboration with the Province of East Flanders, this annual
weekend event transforms the scenic Schelde valley into a living
museum powered by historical steam and diesel machinery.
The event anchors a unique "Steam Triangle" connecting multiple
heritage sites via vintage locomotives, historic vessels, and
heritage shuttle buses.
Key Highlights of the Event
The Steam
Railway Experience: Historic steam and diesel locomotives
operate an intensive heritage schedule along the museum railway
line between Baasrode-Noord and Puurs. Visitors can ride the
vintage carriages, look inside the driver's cabs, and explore a
massive exhibition of rolling stock.
The Steam
Loop (Stoomrondje): A signature feature of the event
involves the arrival of an authentic historic steamboat (such as
the Dockyard III). Passengers can purchase a combo ticket to
experience both vintage rail travel and a scenic cruise on the
Schelde river between Baasrode and Sint-Amands.
The Grand
Steam Parade: Each evening, the festival climaxes in a
spectacular parade where multiple fully operational steam
locomotives line up and showcase their power at the Baasrode-Noord
station grounds.
Four Heritage
Sites in One Ticket: A single day-pass grants access to
the entire transit network and seamlessly connects visitors to four
unique regional heritage locations:
• Baasrode-Noord Station: The bustling heart of
the festival featuring live steam engine demonstrations, model
railways, and a historic vehicle exhibition.
• Baasrode Shipyards (Scheepswerven Baasrode): A
protected 3-hectare maritime heritage site where guests can explore
restored historical dry docks and shipbuilding workshops.
• Gansakkermolen (Sint-Amands): A beautifully
preserved historic windmill that opens its doors specifically for
guided tours during the weekend.
• Puurs Station: An expansive modern and historic
exhibition featuring special diesel and electric locomotives from
various railway operators.
