The locomotives of series 269 were the third generation of Japanese locomotives acquired by RENFE. Due to positive experiences with the predecessor models, the order for Mitsubishi locomotives manufactured in Spain increased between 1973 and the 1980s. The series 269 became the most numerous locomotive series in Spain and includes many variants. With a power of 3100 kW and a top speed of 140 to 160 km/h, they are the dominant locomotives of Spanish electric traction. They are divided into various subseries, each with different characteristics.
