About

Arnold

Arnold was founded on October 4, 1906, by Karl Arnold in Nuremberg, Germany, initially establishing itself as a premier manufacturer of tin toys, including ships and dollhouses. Following the destruction of its facilities during World War II, the company shifted its focus to the emerging small-scale model railway market. In 1960, the brand introduced the "Arnold Rapido 200" line at a 1:200 scale, but it was the 1962 transition to the 1:160 scale with a 9 mm track gauge that revolutionized the industry. This innovation effectively launched the N scale as a global standard, and the company’s "Rapido coupler" was subsequently adopted by manufacturers worldwide to ensure cross-brand compatibility.

Throughout the late 20th century, Arnold solidified its reputation for mechanical precision and was a leader in developing automatic uncoupling systems and standardized polarity. After becoming part of the Italian Rivarossi Group in 1995 and later being acquired by Hornby PLC in 2004, the brand underwent a modern revitalization. Today, Arnold remains the premier N scale specialist within the Hornby International portfolio, focusing on high-fidelity European prototypes. Its catalog is prized by collectors for its extensive range of German, Swiss, and French locomotives, as well as a growing presence in the TT (1:120) scale, all characterized by prototypical accuracy and integrated digital technology.
